Understandably the author had very little of Claire’s personal story to go off of, but at times the character development felt a little forced and even off-putting in the effort to portray her as a woman ahead of her time and held back by station and conventions.
However, as the story continued I found myself invested in Claire and her father as his career progressed and her family grew,  so in that regard I’d say the author did win me over to care about Claire Eiffel. I do enjoy hearing about the lesser known people in famous world histories.
