The Near Witch
by V.E. Schwab
I wanted to love it, but while there were incandescent moments, I was left a little cool. Also had a real problem with the name Lexi. Way too 80s for this pre-industrial tale. Same with the cover, actually. Story was solid and spooky, but plotting sometimes predictable and some elements were needlessly drawn out (Lexi visits the forest 3 times? And never notices the sun is setting until it's too late?). Plus I am over romance. Not every story needs it, certainly not the love at first sight with boy with mysterious powers variety. This could have been great girl power, but instead Cole's power becomes a crutch and Lexi is diminished by her love. However, when the writing is on, it's ON. Some great, lyric turns of phrase. So while I was not enthralled with this one, I'm willing to give the author another chance.
