The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
challenging
dark
tense
fast-paced
Don't really feel comfortable giving this one a star rating, considering the subject matter and the fact that it's based off real life war crimes. That said, RF Kuang's writing is engaging and I definitely want to read the rest of the trilogy.
That said, PEOPLE WERE NOT JOKING ABOUT CHAPTER 21. Really all of part three is one major potential trigger after another, but chapter 21 contains the worst of it. PLEASE heed the content warnings for this book if you're considering it. I had to skim over chunks of it personally.

Graphic: Addiction, Animal death, Body horror, Bullying, Child death, Death, Drug abuse, Drug use, Genocide, Gore, Hate crime, Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Torture, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Xenophobia, Blood, Grief, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, War, Injury/Injury detail, Classism
Moderate: Confinement, Slavery, Suicidal thoughts, Colonisation
Minor: Excrement, Vomit
Colorism plays a part in the early sections of the book. Pretty sure the sexual violence includes children, but I skim-read that part. Lots of war crimes. Again, chapter 21 is the most graphic.
