The story of Dona Flor has everything, including an exotic location and a magical, spiritual element which doesn't become apparent until near the end of the book and which changes the nature of the story completely. Dona Flor's two husbands reflect the duality of her own nature and that of the society in which she lives. Valdinho is rascally, passionate and unreliable, contrasted with Dr Teodoro, an upright citizen who gives Dona Flor respectability, routine and security.
