No one’s fault but my own, but I thought this book was a thriller/murder mystery so I went in expecting plot twists, suspense, etc.
After reading it, I’d categorize it as a fictional true crime. Mostly retellings of a past murder, as the narrator and cast of characters try to get to the truth behind it.
Makkai’s writing is gripping and engaging. The narrator is an absolute mess and you can feel her unraveling as things fall apart. But she’s also relatable to anyone out there who loves true crime and obsesses over it.

You will not get a plot twist, you will not really get suspense. You will get a realistic (and a bit unsatisfying) ending. I did need answers and I was flipping through the pages to get them. Worth the read just know what you’re reading unlike me!
