I wasn't expecting it but Overture is my favorite Sandman volume. Although it could be read as a prequel, there is so much more nuance and complexity if you know all of what has come before. It's a sequel prequel and the plot is as difficult to explain as that sounds.  The artwork is gorgeous and my favorite part was that, halfway in, I realized that we embody Destiny holding and reading from his book with the way the book is constructed, with many 2 page spreads allowing us to fall into this trippy story.  This comic is beautiful in conception and execution and a wonderful ending?/beginning? to the Sandman saga. I'm impressed and obsessed.
