Love Marriage
by Monica Ali
I couldn’t find the right mood and started Love Marriage a couple of times just to put it aside for weeks - until last week. I picked up Love Marriage right where I left it the last time and all of sudden I was drawn into the story of Yasmin and Joe, two soon-to-be doctors, whose dysfunctional families’ dynamics turned up in full force when they started to plan and arrange their wedding.
I LOVE a dysfunctional family, especially when an author manages to show the full spectrum of human emotions and behaviors when it comes to our blood relatives. And Love Marriage had TWO families to dissect and took up the courage to discuss many, many other issues as well. I can’t even name them all without spoiling, but believe me: it was a lot without ever being too much.
The ending was not necessary for me, but still I’m more than impressed - and really happy for myself that the author has another great novel up her sleeve with this theme. Can’t wait to read Brick Lane soon!
