Something Rich and Strange: Selected Stories by Ron Rash

5.0

I don't usually read short stories, but was a collection to be savored. My only complaint is sometimes I'd get so involved with the characters I hated seeing the story end. Many times I pondered what had happened, because the stories were quite open ended- allowing you to make your own decisions about the characters final outcome. Many of my favorites were set in the Civil War days and I truly wish Ron Rash would write an entire novel set in this time period. Some of the saddest stories involved drug use - both "The Ascent" and "Those Who are Dead are Only Now Forgiven" broke my heart. "The Night the New Jesus Fell to Earth" made me laugh out loud. A great collection from one of my favorite contemporary authors.
