The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

4.0

The Eye of the World, being the first book of The Wheel of Time Series, is the weakest novel in this incredible saga. But it is also a great first novel that promised a great expectation for a long saga.

Robert Jordan writing, world building and character work is incredible. His writing is as beautiful and complex is the Wheel of Time's intricate weaves.

Robert Jordan's, who was a war veteran, has written some of the best battle scenes I have read.  Their shear brutality and horror, complexity and hyper-realism, and even the most magical parts of war are realistic in the execution of war.

The Eye of the World is Robert Jordan's version of Lord of the Rings, like a fanfiction that has the same level as greatness.

Robert Jordan uses literary every trope and archetype within the world of fantasy to build the fou dating to what is to become a I credible original series.  Though Robert Jordan used well used tropes and archetypes Jordan has done so with such a twist that the novel feels like a breath of fresh air after being in a dust filled room.

Robert Jordan's character writing is some of the best in literature. They are realistic and passionately detailed. They are also easily lovable and hateable. Like Rand I Ginuwine hated him until the last three books. I have so much live for Nynaeve, Egwene, Aviendha, Verin(my favorite of the Aes Sedai), Moiraine (my other favoriteAes Sedai also probably is the baddest bitch of Wheel of Time), Faile, Siuan, Perrin, Davram, Gareth, Loail, Alyas,  Tom and many Many others.

One of the things that make The Eye of the World the weakest novel is the fact that it only focuses one character making it obvious who the Dragon Reborn will be. It takes away such a fascinating concept of who the Dragon Reborn will be. And with so many great characters it was so disappointing to not read about them.

Also the very obvious Lord of the Rings moments does not help. And when I mean obvious I really do mean glaringly obvious. (Even if Jordan has some better ideas and DEFINITELY has better characters. I said what I said).

The magic system is the best. It is like a mix of Tai Chi and elemental magic.
