Somehow, this book celebrating a geek subculture manages to . . . not really share a whole lot about it. Representation is key and awesome, so I love that this book depicts, honestly and beautifully, a Black woman doing what she loves and *who* she loves. ;-)
However, for the amount of detail actually included about cosplay culture, she could have been really into Lego building or making realistic cakes or any other niche Thing. The book felt really weighed down by the pressure Kenya felt to succeed and Cam’s character frequently slipped into something that felt too idealistic or two-dimensional. I was also, frankly, disappointed that there was not more of an Atlanta flavor after the first chapter or two.
I guess the tl/dr is: tantalizing book that falls short on the details but still provides a readable friends-to-lovers with welcome representation in a geek setting.
