this suprised me tbh. i had to read this for class and i was shocked at how turbulent this plot was. i was actually reminded of the knives out plot when it came to “Tom” character’s arc. except he’s waaaayyy worse than marta ya know. but anyways this was a pretty surface level but good analysis & example of how silly the construct of race is. also how damaging it is ofc. also i may be looking too hard but i also think there was a slight commentary on the demonization & disregard of metaphysical practices. anything pagan or strange is instantly discredited by whiteness (“Tom”). there were also so many full circle moments that made this a satisfying read. twain’s prose really immerses you in this narrative.
