A Pair of Silk Stockings
by Kate Chopin
As I understand, Kate Chopin was a single mom with a lot of kids. When her husband died, she turned to writing to make money. She learned how to be a shrewd money manager. I'm sure she struggled more than once over spending a little on just herself. This short is about that internal struggle.
A mom, absorbed with the needs of the present and always scraping by, unexpected found herself with about $350 (in 2016 dollars). After taking care of the children's needs, could she spend some on herself? Was this a gift from God for her to just enjoy? Should she be responsible or impulsive? Invest this money or buy some stockings, have a nice dinner, and go to a play? What's the right thing to do?
