Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

3.0

A mashup of Shirley Jackson's The Hunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle with elements of The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey.

As someone who vividly visualizes what they read, there was so much darkness in this one and not enough description; it could have been much more atmospheric and eerie, given the backdrop.

While full of dark themes exploring the depths of human morality, there was just not enough time to explore all of them deeply to be impactful. Also, the characters were either good or bad, with no in-between, and was a little disappointing for me personally.

This leaned more on the side of a fantastical mystery thriller; it was entertaining, and I'd recommend it.
