I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

5.0

this book is like that one tumblr post that's like "when I was 7 i had a crush on a girl in my class & didnt know how to deal w it so I wrote her a letter that just said 'get out of my school'"

one thing you can always count on casey mcquiston for is a cast of insane chaotic gay people. IKSW is no exception, and in fact may be the rule. all these bitches? gay and messy.

i will fully cop to losing my mind in the goodreads update progress tab (not sorry) because everything that happens in this book feels like whiplash. it throws you in the deep end with these weird mcs and then you learn to love them over time, which is honestly so easy. IKSW is fully of mcquistonisms, the easy way they make all conversations feel so real and simultaneously like a movie. mcquiston is just really good at capturing the feeling of youth, that sweet spot between the insanity of being a teenager and the self-awareness that you are being insane but can't help it.

shara is like an insane mix of Sam Dean from Daybreak, Aster Flores from The Half of It, and April Stevens from Teenage Bounty Hunters, and i am obsessed with her. i honestly did not think i would like her by the end; i thought i'd walk away with a cast full of side characters who i loved desperately and feel lukewarm about shara, just grateful to her for bringing the rest of them into the picture, but she surprised me by the end, much in the same way i expect chloe was surprised (wow, good book has good writing; shocker). she's like if a manic pixie dream girl was less Dream and more Girl. she's feral and self-destructive and surprisingly self-assured, and she and chloe are both so chaotically obsessed with each other it just makes sense.

i am also so in love w the secondary cast. one thing about cmq is that they WILL write the best secondary characters!!!!!! rory and smith i want to kiss you both on the forehead and then feed you homemade cookies forever. my sweet summer children. i loved watching smith come into himself and rory be stupid and angsty and repressed and it's so golden retriever and black cat boyfriends
