This Bitter Earth by Bernice L. McFadden

2.0

This book was suggested to the book club I'm a part of as a quality read. I confess that I opted to review it via an audio, after having attempted to read a soft cover copy. I thought that by listening to the story, I would be able to better appreciate the story in a much more profound way. The aforementioned helped and yet it did not help. Bottom line, I was not attracted to this story. I found This Bitter Earth to be dark, troubling, and tragic. (FYI:I understood that there were elements of what might be viewed as hope or perhaps glimpses of good, but overall it was a hard mix. There were two things that stood out for the good - the colorful settings and conflicts painted by the author and the complexity of the characters, in an emotional sense. These things made the story...tolerable.)

In fairness, I must state that I did not read Sugar prior to reading this one. I should have.
