They Called Us Exceptional: And Other Lies That Raised Us by Prachi Gupta

challenging dark emotional sad slow-paced

4.75

4.7/5 stars. I made the assumption that this book was more self-help than memoir, plus I knew nothing about the author or the events that prompted her to write her story. Needless to say, this was a DIFFICULT read, extremely triggering. I also listened to it via audiobook so I was gifted with the author's voice cracking at the more emotional moments, adding to how hard it was to take in the story. It was both completely relatable as an eldest daughter of Indian-Canadian immigrants but also shocking in how it diverged from my own lived experience with a kind and loving family/upbringing. But I'm glad I read it, I found it very inspiring.
