My Name Is Resolute by Nancy E. Turner

3.0

As a young child captured by pirates in her homeland of Jamaica in 1729, this novel follows Resolute throughout her life until the American Revolution in 1776. Historical fiction, strong female character, pirates - what's not to love? Unfortunately I spent the first part of the book completely annoyed by the naive and whiny main character. It's not until reaching page 175 out of 585 (30%) that she ages 5 years in one chapter and becomes much more bearable. The second half of the book was far better than the first. It was exciting to follow the events leading up to the American Revolution (although heartbreaking to read how the colonists were treated by the British soldiers). If only I had taken American history in high school! If the book had started on chapter 14, I would have rated it 4 stars.
