I think I get what this book is trying to do... it's a societal commentary on the (lack of) autonomy of womanhood, of making yourself smaller for a man, of searching for an identity outside of "desirable" - I get that... but it just didn't really land for me.

Part of it was that the weird misogynistic/anti-trans/low-key racist stuff was supposed to point out the underlying insidious nature of the MMC (also be so for real, who is gonna grovel over a white man called Doug), but it was done so flippantly and barely addressed that it just felt jarring.

Anyway instead of reading Hillbilly Elegy you can just read this and you'll still get the general idea of JD Vance's ideal world, just in case you've missed any of his sound bites lately.
