The Awakening by Kate Chopin
5.0
One of the most emotional and heartbreaking books I've ever read. Kate Chopin's lyrical and emotive writing style is what stayed with me throughout the book. She managed to captivate the tortured soul of Edna Pontellier's and her final transformation which was utterly heart-rending.
This is considered one of the earliest feminist manifestos and I can't recommend it enough to readers out there. It's the best choice if you're a fan of Virginia Woolf's and Sylvia Plath's imaginative yet hauntingly lyrical prose/poetry.
Edna's story is a sad reminder of the social constraints women have to endure transhistorically. It's a late coming-of-age tale of a wife who realizes she's led a loveless life due to being trapped by social norms and gender roles. It's a truly engaging story of accepting to love yourself and listening to your desires.
