A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne

Did not finish book. Stopped at 35%.
I DNFd this book at 35% and will not pick up this author again.

I am someone who need CW and seek them out, I went to the authors website and she calls CW spoilers and newsflash they are not spoilers they are mobility aids for people who have trauma and mental health to navigate the work safely.

The author lists then all the ones not in the book to “not spoil” and then a very small list of what is in it. I was like this is a fucking weird ass way to spend your energy exhausting 15 things not in the book versus just listing what it in it!

And this was my bad at this point proceeding and thinking that the subjects and readers were going to be handled with care.

The FMC has a flashback or reliving due to a demon power of the death of her family including her 3/4 year old brother and the narrator even makes sure to talk in a child voice and in a child manner ask why she would hurt him/ kill them and goes into some detail of what happened to them with the gruesome way they died.

My Trigger is child loss- I’ve lost a child and in case people don’t get it or the author happens to look at her reviews: when you list that “child harm” is not in the book well…. Child death is child harm. And grief trigger is not enough, grief are the emotions people face after death not a flash point to a child begging his sister to not hurt them or cause harm to them by being near them because she attracts demons. It’s also super fucking triggering to your readers who have lost a child, as guilt comes into the grief process. So the specific aspect of a child making a FMC feel guilt over his death was truly one of the most traumatic ways to set me off.

I would not recommend this book or this author to anyone because they do not take the time to inform their readers in a way that will keep them safe from harm. They will make you aware of things not in the book that are not even comprehensive so read with caution and protect yourself if you do pick this author up.
