Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Edwin G. Burrows, Mike Wallace

4.0

Crazy to think a 1400 page book only has 200 years of history in it. The history is so much more than NYC by the facts and figures, though, so it makes sense once you dive in. There is so very much to read here. So very much to absorb and digest, but it goes down smoothly due to the pace, sections, illustrations and deep dives that the author takes to bring a social history of NYC. Great stuff.
