I ate this book up.  The writing was not great at the beginning but definitely got better in the second half.  The story definitely more than made up for any shortcomings in the writing style.  I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.  It was one crazy event after another. 
Also that ending!  I haven't stopped thinking about this book for days. I feel traumatized but in a good way.  I can't wait for the next one to come out.
