Ego Is the Enemy
by Ryan Holiday
Holiday's most mature work yet, "Ego Is the Enemy" uncovers the role our egos play in thwarting our ambitions, undermining our successes, and amplifying our failures. As in his book "The Obstacle Is the Way," Holiday draws from a wide range of historical figures as examples and counter-examples.
I wish, though, that Holiday would have drawn from non-Western sources. All of his advice boils down to doing combat with one's ego and suppressing it. If he'd looked into Buddhist writings on the ego, he would have found a less aggressive, and equally effective approach: that the ego is itself an illusion, and that in recognizing this illusion, one can get out of one's own way and accomplish good and great things.
