This book had me crying my eyes out. I am a domestic violence survivor. I got myself out of an abusive marriage and I feel like this book helped me realize some things about myself from that time. Maybe even heal a small piece of me. It also helped me to realize that I did the right thing by leaving my ex-husband. Not just for me, but for my daughter. What would she have witnessed if we had stayed together? What would she have been subjected to? All this time I've had tiny doubts and guilt in the back of my mind for breaking up our family but now, I truly believe it when I say it was for the best. He never deserved me and I am at peace with knowing that I did right by my daughter in leaving.
*SPOILERS*
Aside from relating to this book, there are several issues I have with it that many other reviewers have mentioned.
1. Ryle always had anger and control issues. That was super obvious from Chapter 1. Breaking her down with begging until she would agree to sleep with him was so gross. A really flaccid attempt at chivalry.
2. Atlas being 18 when he slept with a literally just turned 16 yr old Lily is absolutely disgusting. I get that they were both in high school, but still. Disgusting.
3. Not wanting to 100% separate from Ryle just because she was pregnant and "hormonal" is ridiculous. He terrorized you. Doing it literally right after giving birth makes no sense if the hormones were the excuse. 🙄
4. Trusting this man to be alone with a defenseless baby when you know the little thing sets him off and makes him violent is a shock. Idk, but that's risky to me.
I understand this is loosely based on her parents relationship, but she could have done better in a lot of the story.
I truly enjoyed reading this because it made me FEEL a lot. I will read the sequel, of course. I do hope the movie improves a lot of the stuff wrong here though.
