Uzumaki by Junji Ito

5.0

Are you afraid of spirals? This book will make you wary of them at the very least.

The story follows a high school student, Kirie, and her boyfriend, Shuichi, as they start to notice their town being driven mad by spirals. A simple premise expertly executed by Ito. The atmosphere is eery and the presence of the curled shape feels more and more suffucating as the narrative continues.

Taking a simple shape, the author was able to craft a truly terrifying tale. The imagery is going to live rent free in my mind for the rest of my life. I loved how each segment of the overarching narrative is split into palatable chapter style short-stories. Each segment impacts the following and concepts developed in early chapters have lasting implications throughout the entire book. If you are a fan of horror, I would absolutely recommend reading this masterpiece!
