Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence

4.0

My first foray into the wonderful world of D.H Lawrence, and although Sons and Lovers is an earlier, perhaps more conventional and definitely less sexually explicit work, there's a gritty transgressive-ness which I really liked. The prose is brilliant at times and fully situates you in the bleak coal mining towns and bustling industrial cities of early 20th century England.

Paul Morel is a rather selfish and incredibly frustrating character. Most of this time it felt like this was deliberate/the entire point of the novel, but sometimes it was hard to tell what D.H. was on about in the scenes between Paul and Miriam/Clara, his tortured artist bs etc. I haven't read any of D.H. Lawrence's philosophy but I hope its nothing like Paul's philosophising. His mum, and the relationship between her and him, is more interesting, partly because you feel like a part of Mrs Morel's character is always veiled behind her role as wife and mother.

By about 3/4 of the way through I was thinking it was more of a 3.5 star review but the ending is for the most part beautifully done
