One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
3.5

This was just ok. A magical fog plagues the land causing people to be forever lost in the woods, and infects children with a magical illness that gives strange powers but at high costs. The king has ordered the death of anyone found infected. The main character was lucky, her family chose to keep the illness a secret, and she has let them believe she had no powers. She doesn’t tell them about the monster that lives in her mind. She meets unlikely allies, including a dark, brooding love interest.
Perhaps it is the magical deck of cards that just didn’t do it for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll read the sequel, the cliffhanger I’ve been left on is too great a temptation.
