This is my second read of this book and I find the experience much improved by doing the tandem read with Empire of Storms. One of SJM’s special talents is to redeem seemingly unlovable characters. Chaol’s personal journey in this series is probably rivaled only by Aelin in terms of personal growth.
Yrene is still one of the best characters in the series and I love the tie in from previous books.
My one main critique is the disability representation is questionable at best. However, Considering when it was written, I will give it some grace and say that Chaol gets there in the end, he just had to overcome a lot of internalized ableism.
