The Haunting Season: Ghostly Tales for Long Winter Nights by Imogen Hermes Gowar, Kiran Millwood Hargrave, Elizabeth Macneal, Andrew Michael Hurley, Jess Kidd, Bridget Collins, Laura Purcell, Sara Collins, Natasha Pulley

SO I decided to read a spooky book for Halloween. A strange and macabre collection of tales to read at your peril. Many of them are set in England in the coldness of winter, some in different time periods; they actually made me feel like I was stuck in a Victorian time loop. Some of the stories stood out more than others,; I finished a few and sat back, ready to start another, others left me thinking and re-reading those last pages again to confirm the twist at the end.
Some of the stories were written in a wat that needed no paranormal or supernatural elements, they were chilling and the descriptions were startling and scary to say the least. My favourite story was called ‘Confinement’, and the author’s note explains how this was based on a real case of a baby murderess and the author’s own experiences of depression. The use of colour in this short story was also chilling , and it set the scene for the horrors to come. ‘The Chillingham Chair’ was another that caught my interest: a possessed contraption likened to a motorised wheelchair that helps to on cover the mystery, and of course the twist at the end!
An interesting collection of stories from all female writers, something very different for your Halloween evening.
