3.5

I have very mixed feelings about this book.

Highlights:
1. the world building and the different kinds of dragons was really cool to me. That first chapter was really well done and it reeled me into the story.
2. Very skillful way the different time jumps were handled and how the romance developed, I really enjoyed seeing it all come together.

Lowlights:
1. FMC was incredibly frustrating, way too stubborn. Also, I’ve recently read my fair share of badass, snarky, closed off FMCs so my patience for her ran pretty low. (Therefore this might be more of a me thing than a book thing)
2. Too much gore (especially at the beginning). Made it hard to sympathize with FMC which I get is the point but I found myself skimming through many pages which is something I don’t usually do.
3. Slightly connected to the point above, the writing style felt inconsistent. At times so flowery to the point of becoming overly repetitive (the choking metaphor was used way too much) and at others super contemporary. Again it made me skim lots of pages. Also, it is worth noting that just because an extended use of metaphors is applied does not mean that this is therefore “lyrical” writing, it just makes it superfluous and harder to follow.
4. Overall plot didn’t really advance much. More of a setting the scene, thus would be curious to see how the next book unfolds.
