Thron in Flammen: Roman by Brian Staveley
4.0

Writing a sequel is not easy. The story and the characters are already rolling, which makes it easier to start. But standing still is not an option, you have to improve.
"The Providence of Fire" improved, but at the same time, it's weaknesses became more apparent.
At least to me. The actions are still a bit too extreme, the descriptions too long, the prose lacks finesse. But it works. Simple, but effective.
I'm conviced Mr. Staveley knows little about animals and that's why the Kettral (giant birds of pray!!) are still being handled like super cool helicopters. spoiler:
SpoilerThat's also why you have killed off the only character who has shown empathy towards the birds, RIGHT? >.<

The Flea is still my favorite character, finally someone who knows how shit has to be done. I'm waiting for him to drop the trope line "Too old for this shit" sometime soon.

Looking forward to book 3.
