This book recently came up in the audible deals and with a title like that, I obviously couldn’t say no!
*spoiler warning this book isn’t about Keanu Reeves!
Becky Holmes opens our eyes to the dark underworld of romance scams, sextortion, and lovebombing, by winding up the scammers herself, hearing the tragic stories from the victims, the reality of the lives of the scammers from the Yahoo boys in Nigeria and Sakawa boys in Ghana and the lack of the redress for the victims.
We’ve all received the tell-tale scam emails from Nigerian princes, we’ve all in our own minds when hearing these stories suggested that these victims were somewhat naive and foolish, but this book includes the true stories and how they failed to see the red flags. It has brought the question of what more dating websites can do, when we’ve seen how these scammers operate and how they can’t intervene. This idea of vulnerable customers and how some contributors advised if the bank asked them certain questions about these transactions, they may have admitted the truth. How families and friends of these victims could and should respond better and how Fraud Action is severely under-resourced and can’t provide the redress victims hoped for.
It was an interesting listen and definitely recommend, but apologies for the lack of Keanu Reeves
