The Secrets We Keep by Kate Hewitt

1.0

A friend suggested we read this novel in our book club and unfortunately, we were disappointed. I won't go into a detailed summary of the novel, but instead point out a few things that could have been improved upon.

The story follows the parallel lives of 2 women who rent summer homes next door to each other in Upstate New York. One is from Park Slope, Brooklyn, the other from the Upper East Side. The author tries to make them opposite in the sense that one is very rich while the other is not. I am a native of Brooklyn and I must say that putting making the woman from Park Slope seem like she was poor is just inaccurate. That part of Brooklyn is one of the most expensive parts of the borough and just not realistically portrayed. Aside from that, I think the author tried to show that the characters had a lot of similarities to each other in their personal lives, but it was just too many similarities and neither woman stood out with their own unique traits.

I felt like the whole story was very cliche, and too many events occurred at exactly the same time for it to be realistic. That was probably my biggest takeaway from this story, is that it didn't seem realistic to me. It was a bit depressing and not something I would recommend.
