Heart in the Highlands by Heidi Kimball
5.0

This book was heart wrenching but in a good way. It's a horrible thing to have to overcome and I wasn't sure how it was going to go.

Basically- they are wed as complete strangers, but she felt safe enough to sleep with her husband on her wedding night and then wakes up the next morning to find him gone and he's gone for over 4 years. Reason? It was a way of seeking revenge for his father not taking care of his mother's side of the family. Meanwhile, disregarding and abandoning the other people in his life he should have ultimately felt responsibility for and cared for (wife, mother, uncle, land, etc.) His presence there would have been more helpful to that family he wanted his father to take care of. Him abandoning everyone just didn't make sense. I felt like they should have been more upset than his wife for leaving...

He comes back remorseful and to find he has a child. His devastation on how he left her to deal with that on her own overwhelms him, but he seeks to win back her trust and BOY is that a LOOOOONG road. You are rooting for him the whole time because nothing is better than when a family can stay together but major trust/abandonment issues from her side and can you blame her?

This book was eloquently written and unraveled the thought processes behind offering forgiveness. It was a great read.
