I'd been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it did not disappoint. While this book is obvious in it's tribute to the gothic horror genre it is also widely creative. I thought I was going to predict the source of the hauntings and while I was close to right it took an absolutely wild turn. Every detail in this book is put in and repeated for a reason, so everything lines up and is important to the story that takes place. The historical setting is also so well done that while is book is very much fantasy, the details surrounding it make a lot of sense. The paperback edition comes with a few essays at the end by the author explaining how the English silver mine, the house, the Eugenics mindset, and even the landscape where the story is set is all grounded in reality. This book would pair well with del Toro's "Crimson Peak".
Graphic: Body horror, Confinement, Incest, Misogyny, Racism, Sexual violence, Violence, Kidnapping, and Murder
Moderate: Suicide, Blood, Cannibalism, and Colonisation
