Years by LaVyrle Spencer

5.0

I clearly remember buying this book at Target when it was out in paperback. I had picked a different book with a less sexy cover; I was still a teenager at the time. Anyway, the next time I was buying a book I bought it and I loved this book. I still love it. My book is falling apart. I can recall being in my light blue bedroom, lying on my bed, reading this book. There are so many books that I've read and forgotten, but this one...never. Ever.

If I read it fresh today I would probably think it was too slow (and it is a bit slow in the middle of the beginning), and not nearly sexy enough. But what I like about it is that Linnea and Teddy (and John and Nissa and Kristian...) feel so real to me. This book has the best of LaVyrle Spencer's ability to bring about a sense of place and the hearts of people. For me, these people and the place they called home are HISTORY, not fiction.

I saw this book re-covered later with flowers, as LaVyrle apparently fought for. I mean yes, many romance covers are horrible. And this one is totally naked but for a tiny sheet, though it's not THAT in your face. But this is the One True Cover for me. I guess my inner teenager is still in love with this image of Teddy. Hehehe. And Teddy...dear Teddy. Yes, I will merry you.

November 2021 re-read of audiobook. The narrator isn't terrible, and sometimes she's good. Like I can usually tell who is doing the thinking (Teddy or Linnea). But she has this very annoying thing where she draws out the end of phrases. Like the word will take up 2x as long as it should. And maybe she slightly draws it up at the end of phrases too. Ugh. The narrator is good at dialogue; it's the prose.

OK, Linnea is super ridiculous sometimes. And totally a fat shamer. Damn.
