Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami

5.0

Murakami has this almost supernatural ability where he can make you feel lonely with just a line. More appropriately, with a few lines Murakami yanks out the void, that you carry sealed within, and puts it on display right in front of you.

It's not as abstract as "Kafka on the Shore" but it has a similar tone. It's more focused on the emotion of love and how it relates to desire but at the same time exists independently. You’ll find beautiful soliloquies, internal monologues, and surrealistic descriptions of what the characters are going through. There are proses where he viscerally describes the shift in one's perception of the world that existence/non-existence of a person can bring about.
