This book was one that had been on my TBR for a long time. I finally read it as part of a book club and I am so glad I did. The pace of the book was extremely fast from the first chapter, which was much needed after a string of slower paced books. Even with the fast pace, nothing felt rushed or brushed over. The writing was the perfect blend of first and third person narration that varied from different character perspectives. Each chapter changed between five or six perspectives following different characters on a somewhat converging set of plots. Some characters were not my favorite, but the ones I did like were the focus of the book.
The world building in this book was a very good balance of many things authors often attempt and miss. No one aspect was overdone or underdone. Characters' motives were clear. We learned things as they did without being totally confused. There was never any form of info-dumping which is a big pet peeve of mine. The magic system was unique enough to not have cliches but also was very intuitively arranged so as to be easy to follow.
I greatly appreciated that the author was able to create some elements that were very low stakes and pleasant while also choosing to not pull punches with some gut-wrenching deaths or concepts. It made the story much more immersive than when authors go too far on the side of being cozy or attempt to be like Game of Thrones.
