Heroine Complex
by Sarah Kuhn
What a pleasant surprise! I let this languish in my TBR pile for a year, suspicious of the sub-4 average score on Goodreads, but I picked it up on impulse earlier this week and boy did I love it.
So many things to love:
- Evie as a narrator. Flawed, fierce and funny, she goes on a beautiful journey over the course of this book.
- Female friendship depicted in all its glory. At its best, an amazing experience when your sister from another mister has your back no matter what. At its worst... Welp, no one can hurt you like your bestie. Aveda could have easily been a two dimensional nightmare but she also went on a subtler journey and the friendship between the two main characters was masterfully crafted.
- Superheroines! I need more stories about superheroines please. The weird and wonderful world of Evie's San Francisco was great fun, and there's lots of opportunities for fun future stories.
- Great supporting cast. I love stories about families by choice, and this cast of oddballs was sheer adorbz. Even if I wanted to shake Bea, repeatedly.
- Diversity. Evie reminisces about her and Aveda watching The Heroic Trio and marvelling at seeing actresses who looked like them on screen and kicking arse, nicely hammering home how important representation is. So it's great to see two Asian American leads, beautifully depicted on the cover in arse-kicker glory.
- And obviously because I'm a sucker for a love story... Yeah, I loved this element too, lots of warm and fuzzies.
My wonderful book fairy, Persad, kindly got me the second book in the series so I'll be devouring another (hopefully) delightfully bonkers trip to a demon-infested San Francisco very soon. I can't wait.
