Ebony Gate by Ken Bebelle, Julia Vee

I always enjoy urban fantasy that takes such an iconic city like San Francisco and turns it into a character in and of itself. Not only do the authors make San Francisco sentient, but they make it a young city, which is strange to think of if you are a native Californian like myself. In comparison, when you have European and Asian cities that are thousands of years old, you begin to understand how a couple 100 years is really a drop in the bucket.

The array of characters and their different abilities from their dragon blood is also an interesting use of magic. In some ways, it reminded me of Fonda Lee's Jade City, with how individuals learn specific types of abilities better than others.

Our main character, Emiko, has such a traumatic and complex history. How the story unravels in layers helps you connect and sympathize with her plight. Not to mention the mysteries of her past that are hinted at throughout the book. I'm eager to see how she'll continue to grow and heal as the series progresses.
