Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle

5.0

Bury Your Gays is an absolutely incredible novel by Chuck Tingle. I was simply amazed by how many topics this novel was able to discuss while also delivering a genuinely incredible horror story. I honestly can write an entire essay about this book. That’s how much material and thoughts it left me with after turning the last page (or reaching the last second of the audiobook in this case).

As with most horror stories, Bury Your Gays begins with a simple premise, a gay writer in Hollywood is told that the gay characters in the show he’s been working on have to die because of what the algorithm says, hence the title of the novel. From this simple initial conflict, Tingle takes the reader on a truly chilling ride about queer representation, dealing with one’s own sexuality, childhood trauma, corporate greed, and so much more. See, told you I can write an essay about the topics of this story. But I won’t because part of the enjoyment I had with the story was how Tingle revealed one theme after the other while simultaneously increasing the tension of the plot because all the elements complement each other perfectly.
