I enjoy Dave Eggers’s writing but often find I can’t understand the motivation of his characters. In this book I found the underlying motivation made more sense to me. It was grief, grief tinged with a kind of reckless folly. I found myself wanting them to make a grand gesture instead of pissing about so aimlessly. They seem to spend so much time and energy in plotting and awkwardly interacting with the world without achieving much at all. But ultimately I think that is what this book is about, the frustration and cognitive dissonance of grief.
