Divergent by Veronica Roth

3.0

I know I'm a bit "divergent" in my opinion, but for me this book was just meh. I finished it after watching the movie and I am surprised to say that I enjoyed the movie more than the book.

The author's writing style was a bit dull and forced. I often have difficulty buying into a first-person, present-tense narration. I also struggled with some of Tris's descriptions of the adrenaline rush she felt after punching, kicking, or otherwise hurting someone; and with the underlying theme of "faction over family" in the book. These are not thoughts to plant in the young minds of the target audience here.

I am usually a fan of the dystopian novel; I'm just not sure this adds anything worthwhile to the genre.
