The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson
3.0

I have now managed to get through a Brandon Sanderson book (intentionally a short one). It was not as glaringly insufferable as the last time I tried, and I could perhaps see a glimpse of the appeal of his writing - it was easy enough to get through in one sitting. There's an interesting idea; however, the protagonist is still overpoweringly amazing, the writing is plain, the magic is hazy enough to work however the story requires it to at any time, and the remaining characters are modelled on classic, well-used stereotypes. There's even a chase and action sequence at the end. It's readable, yet I have the feeling the effect of it is much like the short-lived stamps in the story, giving one an impression of something meaningful but fading quickly into nothing.
