Animal Man, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison

4.0

An excellent reinvention of a third-tier superhero. This volume is more of a typical superhero comic than the fourth-wall breaking, meta book it becomes later, but you can definitely see the seeds of that at the beginning. The characters are wonderfully written, with Buddy Baker as an atypical superhero who's also a family man and animal-rights activist. There are a few appearances of other DC mainstays (the Martian Manhunter's appearance is delightful), but this book is self-contained enough for anyone to pick up.
