The Ocean at the End of the Lane
by Neil Gaiman
I really liked this, being a pretty big Gaiman fan, my expectations are fairly high to begin with. The only reason I gave this four stars rather than five was while it's billed as an adult novel, it felt more like a kid's book. I don't mean that in any sort of negative way, just changes my expectations on how I view the characters. That being said, it's a fun journey following the events through the eyes of a child. This book reminded me of the curiosity and ease with which we believe as children that somehow gets lost as we get older. One quote that really stuck with me and made me vow to get off the beaten path more:
"Adults follow paths. Children explore. Adults are content to walk the same way, hundreds of times, or thousands; perhaps it never occurs to adults to step off the paths, to creep beneath rhododendrons, to find the spaces between fences. I was a child, which meant that I knew a dozen different ways of getting out of our property and into the lane, ways that would not involve walking down our drive."
I will definitely be putting this into the rotation of books I re-read regularly.
