Right from the start I was really into this story. It is told in two POV’s- Malik and Karina. I really had no idea how this was going to turn out. Malik is trying to get into the city with his sisters to make a better life. There’s a hiccup and he ends up having to kill the princess to save his younger sisters life. Karina doesn’t like life in the palace. She just wants to get away but things turn in a horrible direction.

““First, a story ends when it ends, and not a moment before. If you are unhappy with this ending, make a new one.”

Brown does an amazing job with the world building. I thought this was so well written. Such a strong debut! I loved all the details. The stories that are told in this book were incredible. I felt like I could see them coming alive. The magic was interesting but I really can’t wait for her to delve into that more. I felt like we just scratched the surface of what is going on.

The characters are so good. I really loved Karina and how she didn’t try to be someone she isn’t. She doesn’t want to be a princess and everyone knows that. When it times for her to step up she did. She learned to stand up to those who didn’t believe in her. Malik was not perfect and he had such a struggle. He’s coming from nothing and trying to win this competition to save his sister. He’s doubting himself all the time and he’s fighting the magic within him. It made me love him more because of the flaws. I really can’t wait to see what he does when he comes into his magic.

“The people we lose never truly leave, but that only we get to define how they stay.”

I want to say that it wasn’t predictable but it was. I figured out who was behind the assassination rather quickly. It’s okay though because I still really enjoyed my journey until the reveal. The plot was a little slow at first but once things started going it was so good. I had a hard time putting this book down because there is so much going on back to back! There is one twist at the end that I am excited to see in book two.

Overall, I really loved my time with this book. I totally understand why it took me forever to get my hands on a copy. I really can’t wait for book two and I’m excited that this is a duology!
