The Lake of Souls
by Darren Shan
Book 10 in the Cirque du Freak series.
Darren takes a break from his quest to kill the Lord of the Vampaneze in order to help Harkat figure out his true identity. Mr. Tiny sends the pair through a mysterious portal into another world where they must survive encounters with several grotesque creatures so that Harkat can find the answer he is seeking.
If you're any good at anagrams, it is not at all hard to figure out Harkat's true identity. Mixed in with all of the gory adventure stuff is a look at the importance of friendship and forgiveness that gives the story some emotional depth. (But don't worry boys--it's still incredibly gross and action-packed. No one cries or anything.)
