The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
4.0

A love triangle is at the center of this modern-day "marriage plot" novel (think premises that read like Jane Austen novels).

It's 1982, and Madeleine Hanna is graduating from college. Having just broken up with her boyfriend and with no grad school acceptances she's not too thrilled to begin her future.

Her friend/admirer Mitchell is off to backpack across Europe and India as he further explores religion while deciding whether he will turn his religious studies major into applications to divinity schools.

Meanwhile, Madeleine's ex-boyfriend Leonard is set to begin his stint as a biology intern when he suffers a psychotic break. As graduation quickly gives way to summer, the pair manage to rekindle their romance, but it is put through endless tests as Leonard continues to struggle with his mental illness.

I love this author's work and fans of his previous books will find a well researched novel that tackles a difficult subject (mental illness) and thoughtfully explores it from multiple viewpoints. The love triangle set up is well done in that as a reader I rooted for both men at different points, yet was happy with the ending. This would make an excellent book club selection as there is plenty worth discussing.
