This started out SUPER strong, but then the threads of familial ties and betrayal and such just got too tangled for such a short story. (Whyyyy do I keep reading novellas when I am almost always disappointed with the pacing?) Rosa's flashback stories were amazing though, and I wish Hou Yi's story(s) were told in the same manner--tit for tat story telling would have balanced out the story and played into the fairy tale themes much better (especially since, at least for Western audience's, her story might not be as familiar as Rosa's stories).
